This can mean only one thing:
Baby chicks are a hot item around here and the stores sell out as soon as they get them. They’re supposed to be getting in a new shipment today at Tractor Supply so Vince is going there at lunch and if they have the Gold Stars like we had last time, he’ll choose our babies and bring them home. I’m so excited . . I can hardly wait til lunch time to see if he was able to get some. If not, we’ll have to wait til the next shipment and try again.
Before you ask . . the coop is not built. But it is started and we do have all the wood or at least enough wood to get started. Vince’s carpenter friend is going to help him so hopefully this coop will not take 5 months to build, like the last one did.
He said he’s going to get 8, all girls again. Are you as excited as I am?
Quilter Kathy says
Yes…I am excited for you!
What a great week…a fig tree and some chicks! Well, maybe…crossing my fingers for you!

Chickens are so much fun! I’ve missed mine in the four years since I had to get rid of them…looking forward to your stories and pictures so I can own them vicariously through you!
Angie S. says
Sorry for the typo…auto insert can be difficult at times!

Oh boy! the chickens are comming to town!! YEAAAAA!
can’t wait to see what you name them. Glad that Vince has his carpenter friend to help with the coop. Between having the experience in building the first one plus having a friend with the know how to do the job, building this time should be a cinch.
so inquiring minds wanna know…..will there be a yellow coop on the YellowJacket Ranch, or a purple coop????
Nan says
YES!!!

Why that kind? I’ve never heard of those but since you like colors I’d get some Easter egg chicks. Just don’t ask me to spell the actual name. Or silkies they aren’t very big and from the little bit I’ve been around chickens they are by far the sweetest natured.
Sandie says
Yay! Got my fingers crossed for you! Looking forward to more chicken stories…

Chicks sell out here fast also. One year I ordered mine thru McMurry’s online and received my chicks (all 35) the day they said they would be delivered. You pick them up at the post office. They were day old chicks. I got a mix so there were all kinds. We raised them and when they were old enough to put in the coop, we ran an ad in the paper to sell all we didn’t want to keep. That way I also knew which ones I wanted as I had raised them. The “mean” ones left. I had several people interested in purchasing my leftovers. The chicks are very healthy and have been innoculated. I will do it again as I am out of chickens right now, but we are going to re-do the chicken pen.

We didn’t realize there was only ONE place in the whole county that sells baby chicks and the hatcheries are sold out of the sex links til about mid April or later. We may have to go that route but I sure would like to get them sooner rather than later.
Sherry V. says
Do you have a big enough box?
JudyL says
We don’t put them in a box as long as they need the heat lamp because of fire danger. We have a big Rubbermaid tub that we’ll put them in.

Your Blog is not your Blog without chickens – Looking at the page header.
I hope you have not retired the name of Ruby.

Yay for baby chicks! We just got 6 new ones here from tractor supply also. Hope you are able to get the ones you want today! 🙂

I laughed so hard when I actually read this post! We are on “baby watch” for our latest grandchild and I didn’t even give it a thought that you might be talking about chicks and not children (although it is easy to think of them as one and the same, isn’t it?). Just goes to show you how “all about me” I can get sometimes. Enjoy and I look forward to pictures.

I am excited!!! And that is wonderful that you won’t have to wait 5 months for a house!

I have nothing against chickens, but my first thought was, “Oh, yay, Chad and Nicole are engaged!” LOL.

Hi Judy!
I’m wondering if this little tutorial above to make a little chick noisemaker might appeal to you!?
When I saw it in my email after reading about your impending babies, it made me think of your delight at seeing the chicks for the 1st time!
Take care, Leslie

Yeah, I’m happy for you. Can’t wait to read the chick stories. It will be fun for me to see the babies grow. Been many years since I lived on the farm where there were chicks. We had one rooster that was so mean you couldn’t go out the back door. Dad thought that was real funny ’til it got him from the back!!!!!! Didn’t see that one coming.
Linda S says
Oh exciting! I’ll most likely build my coop myself, so it will probably take me a year to do it! 😉
Regina says
so exciting… we are not allowed chickens in our town (nearby city – yes, rural town -no… go figure). Can’t wait to see pictures of the new girls!
Lynne in Hawaii says
So fun! Anxiously awaiting pictures by the end of the day!
