I think all 10 of my hens are laying now. I’m no chicken/egg expert but I think the 6 Red Stars are all laying nice brown eggs. I believe the Ameraucanas are laying the pink eggs. I’m getting 6 eggs a day. I think I’ll eventually get 8 or 9 eggs each day.
But, who layed this egg? It’s striped and speckled! I’ll be thrilled if all her eggs look like this.
I’m thinking Miss Congeniality layed this one.
She’s the weirdest chicken! She’s a loner. She’s so rarely with the rest of the chickens. She’s often hanging out in a corner all by herself. When you look at her, she just doesn’t look right. And mean! She’s mean as a snake. When we’re petting or hand feeding the other chickens, she sneaks up, acts like she’s going to get in on the action and then she dive bombs trying to peck my hand. Everything about her is strange so I’m figuring she’s the one laying the strange striped, speckled egg.
It’s probably her first egg. It weighed 1.5 ounces, typical of first eggs. The brown one on the back right is from a Red Star and it weighs 2.2 ounces. The lighter egg on the back left is an Amish egg, weighing in at 3.2 ounces! Whew . . that’s a big egg. But, my striped, speckled egg is prettier, don’t you think?

Oh, but I wonder if it taste different 🙂
Wouldn’t that be fantastic if all those speckled eggs were also ALWAYS double yolks as well?

I don’t know who did it, but maybe it was the yogurt????

I just stumbled upon your blog today! Now that i have spent some time looking around i know I’ll had to add it to my blog reader so i don’t miss a thing!
As for the speckled egg i have no clue! But i have had a couple of them pop up in my chicken coup over the past few years and i do not have any of the chicken breeds that you have. I have Cinnamon Queens and Bantams with little fuzzy feet!

Judy, your blog is so fun to read each day! Thank you for sharing so much with us. I’ve always been curious about raising a few chickens for eggs, so watching you do it first has been fun and interesting. Are you able to use 6 eggs a day? What will you do with the extra eggs you have?
Do you think the wicked chicken needs another one of her breed? Just wondering.

Judy, that hen is trying to become the leader over you. Hens have a pecking order. If you get a switch and smack her with it each time she tries to peck you, she will soon learn that YOU are the higest ranked hen in the coop. If you don’t, she will continue to challenge you for the rank.

What an egg!

Love the egg. I don’t agree with the “smack the chicken” comment. It will just make her meaner.
