This story reminds me of the one crawfish Chad found or the one asparagus spear from my plants last year.
We’re always on the hunt for morel mushrooms this time of year. Chad sometimes goes out with his friends and really searches for them. Last year, I was out with Speck and there’s a little creek next to our house. I saw a morel on the other side and it wouldn’t be easy to get to it with Speck on a leash so I planned to let it grow for a few days and go back and get it. Went back and it was gone! I think deer and no telling what else love them too.
Sunday afternoon Chad and Vince were outside in the woods behind the pole barn and Chad happened to look down and stumbled right on one without even looking for it.
I wish he’d stumble across a truck load of them! The one Chad found wasn’t real big . . in fact, it was kinda small . . especially when all three of us had to share it! 🙂
We had just finished dinner but Chad cleaned it, sliced it and I fried it. Yumm! I’ll be on the lookout for more of them. In fact, today is supposed to be warmer so I may go on a mushroom hunt! 🙂

My husband’s been waiting for a morel sighting! He’ll be down in Morgan County this weekend tramping thru the woods and fields looking for them. One year he found a bag full of them – not so many in the past few years.

Good luck. I would have had no idea what that was!

Oh how I miss those wonderful fungi! I grew up in northern Illinois and we went mushroom hunting every year. My dad could identify over a dozen different types of mushroom, but the morel was my favorite. I have been living in Chattanooga for about a year and don’t know if they grow here or not. Good hunting. I hope you find more.
I have been reading your blog for a few months now and really enjoy it. Thanks for sharing your life with us.

Oh man, I love these. The first Spring I was in my house I found 4 behind the garage. I was so excited. Never seen any since. When I was a kid, that was our Mother’s Day activity. Used to usually end up with about half a grocery bag full. Sometimes more. YUMMMMMMMMM

YUMMM! I found some Chantarelles up in the forest in November, but had forgotten Morels are Spring “flowering” ‘shrooms. I’ll go look today! Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh Boy!!!

They’re all over our land in Missouri. Our neighbors called us last year to see if they could go morel hunting on our place since we’re not down there :). I thought it was pretty nice that they asked! 🙂
