In a way, I feel like I’m slacking because these projects are so close to being done but hey .. no matter how little remains to be done, they’re a UFO til they’re finished, right? I’ll apologize right up front for not even taking the time to open these quilts up. I just pulled them off the stack and photographed them. You’ll notice that maybe every one that’s quilted were done using the same panto. I love Keryn Emmerson’s Spiral Square. My copy is worn, tattered and stained. I should order a new one. One day I even thought that maybe the reason I’ve given up quilting is because everyone shamed me for using the same panto all the time so I took it off and used something else. As soon as I finish this blog post, I’m putting my old friend, Spiral Square, back on the longarm and I may never take it off again!
It’s a bit frustrating to have 9 quilts that only need binding, and they’ve been sitting for at least 5 years waiting to be finished. A new day is coming . .
UFO #1:
This might be a Turning Twenty or something similar. I have no idea when I pieced it but it’s quilted and all it needs is binding.
UFO #2:
This is my Holly Jolly Christmas package quilt. Would have been nice to have it done by Christmas but . . it will be done by Christmas 2017. It’s also quilted with Spiral Square and just needs binding.
UFO #3:
This is my Peaches & Dreams quilt pattern and Vince chose the fabrics (from my stash) for this before we left MO so it has to be at least 6 or 7 years old. Another one quilted with Spiral Square and waiting only for binding.
UFO #4:
Well, look at that . . another Spiral Square. This is one I started in October, 2011 while living at the rent house. I think I was feeling pretty frustrated and a bit crazy. This is probably the weirdest quilt I’ve ever made .. not that it’s that weird but my work is so traditional. All it needs is binding.
UFO #5:
I think this is just a scrappy quilt. All it needs is binding.
UFO #6:
This is my Rolling Along pattern. Already quilted – just needs binding.
UFO #7:
UFO #8:
This is a kit I bought at a retreat in Shipshewana, IN quite a few years ago. I bought three kits and this is the second one. The first one actually got finished. All it needs is binding . . which is not fun to bind this bulky, stretchy fabric.
UFO #9:
Ahh . . one that needs quilting and binding. I made two of these. One got finished and sent to a friend who was going through some medical hardships. This one I’m keeping for myself.
UFO #10:
I made this top so many years ago. I made a second one that’s in one of my books but all this one needs is binding.
UFO #11:
I made this one close to 20 years ago – before Vince and I ever got married. An antique almost! 🙂 It needs quilting and binding.
UFO #12:
I don’t really remember making this one . . I think it might have been for some color challenge but I’m not sure. It may have been my test for a BOM many years ago. I have no idea but . . it needs quilting and binding.
There you go .. my list.

Where can we find this panto? It looks really pretty on your quilts.
Ariane says
You will be so happy to get these quilts done. I wouldn’t worry about what others think of which quilting design you used. It’s your quilt, not there’s. You do what you want and what you are comfortable with. I’ve followed your blog for a long time and I always loved your quilts. Don’t be hard on yourself. Just feel accomplished every time you get one of these UFO’s done.
Liz says
Wow – glad you could make up a list… I just logged onto my blog and that might be my first UFO to deal with since I really need to update links and all that stuff. Actually, I probably need to relearn the whole system. Five posts in January 2016 and previous to that was in September, 2014. Oops….
My blog has a list of tops, WIPs and “ideas” but I’m not sure I can locate them since my quilt room is a mess. And, I kinda started a few new ones during the last few years.
So, my UFO list is to finish the project that I started in September and is currently on the table and I think the first quiltathon will be dedicated to organizing the room. I wonder if four days will be enough? May have to start dedicating an hour a day to organizing. Does anyone else have this problem?

I love that panto too. There are now several others like it but Keryns is the best. I am seriously thinking of joining your UFO challenge.
Linda in NE says
Hehe…I think you mostly just hate binding. I hate putting on borders.
meredith says
I think it’s so funny that you used Keryn’s pattern so much. We have a few designs that we use over and over for customer quilts, they just always look good and go quickly as well. Good luck with the UFO’s, I might have to join in on this exercise. I used to love the marathons, we got so much done.
AnnieO says
Wow, lots of great quilts there. I love your Rolling Along pattern, such a good design! Since you taught yourself machine bindings it should be simple to knockout these UFOs!
shirley swift-bruner says
WOW….you should be able to finish all those without a problem. especially that most of them only need binding. lucky you. i made my list today….have are quilts and half are embroidery projects. and then i added 3 extra….in case 1 month i get finished quickly and want to do another. haha i’ll get it on my blog soon….maybe tomorrow….if the ice goes away and i can get across the road.
katie z. says
I bet your skill at that panto is amazing with all its use, so who cares if it’s a repeat? I meander most things because, on my little machine, starting and stopping and clipping threads is a pain. If someone complains, I guess I won’t give them a quilt!
I think my UFO will be completing one section of the hand quilting each month on my Tell it to the Stars quilt. I’ve had it basted for years, quilting two blocks and one set of borders, and put it aside for more urgent projects. Quilting just a chunk each month feels doable, and maybe it’ll finally get on my bed instead of shoved in a wad. Thanks for the inspiration and design talent and lovely blog.

Ok…..I looked at #1 and thought “Oh my gosh….I LOVE this one” and then I looked at #2 and thot “oh my I LOVE this one”……and found myself saying that all the way to #4 and then I just went into wonderment-overload! Even folded and just seeing parts of them they are amazing!!!!!!! (But I am still really partial to #1 because of the greens – and surprisingly #3 with blues in it!!!)
Kate says
It’s a good list with many just needing the binding. Sometimes you have to take some time off, even from something you like/love. Even if you don’t get back into quilting the way you did, it will feel really good to get some of those projects finished.
Dar in MO says
I thought the same thing as Danielle. Oh I love that one, nope, that’s my favorite, oh THAT one for sure. Is #9 the one that your yarn was made from, the “Judy’s Favorite Qullt”? I liked the colors too and ordered a skein of your yarn from Loopy Ewe. Haven’t used it yet, though. With your machine technique of putting on the binding, it should not take you long at all.
Linda P says
Hi Judy, thank you for giving us without a blog a place to make lists.. Haven’t made one yet but will soon. The first thing to finish in the new year will be to quilt my king size “Women of Grace and Charm”.
.. I enjoy reading about your adventures and I’m happy you are talking about quilting again. Merry Christmas to you and your family, from icy and cold IL
dezertsuz says
What wonderful quilts those are. I foresee a lot of binding nights instead of knitting. LOL
Christine says
Thank you for trying to help us get some projects finished. I am sure I can come up with a list of 12 WIPs.
Christine from Ontario
Leslie says
Well i love putting on bindings. Too bad it would cost a fortune to mail them to me in Michigan! I would do them for you? Leslie
Elizabeth says
Lovely quilts, you are an inspiration to us all!
Mary-Kay says
I was in the same boat as you. Binding, binding, binding. I already know what the quilt looks like so why worry about the binding. I don’t have that issue any more. I make myself put the binding on as soon as it’s quilted. No more stack of quilts to bind. Now there’s the stack of tops, waiting to be quilted. Next year!
Alycia @Quiltygirl.com says
Oh I love them all – and I am like you – I have 6 to be bound!! I like the idea of the quilt a thon too – maybe put some mojo back into my organization skills?
Vanda Chittenden says
I like your list, all them them should be pretty easy to finish up. Shudder, you don’t even want to see what have in my box of UFO, and there is way more than 12. Will go through them all, and see which 12 I want to work on for next year. And get a blog post written up for the link up. I just love this idea. And not knowing which UFO you will be working on, is going to be fun as well.
Beth North says
Hoping I get this right. I have so many UFOs to be done. I need all the motivation I can get to finish them. Found one just last week. It is finished now, Christmas quilt. #1: Quilt the INMQ Treasure challenge from last year; #2: Quilt the 30s reproduction Annie’s quilt; #3: quilt May Flowers applique quilt from 2014 swap; #4: Quilt Shekenah’s whole cloth queen quilt; #5: quilt Ducky Wallhanging for daughter’s bathroom; #6: About Trout quilt (needs applique finished, assembled, and quilted; #7: Scrap star quilt (started in 2004 or so); #8: Shekenah’s Dr. Suess quilt; #9: Robert Kaufman quilt started for Shekenah; #10: Vintage pink and white quilt that I purchased 2013 that is foundationed and ready to quilt; #11: Baby girl panel quilt top; #12: Baby boy panel quilt top. That should do it.
Quilter Kathy says
That was fun to see some of your old UFOs!
That’s a lot of binding waiting for you 🙂
Stearns, Carol says
I have plenty of UFO’s but no time to list them as I am leaving for a week and back on Jan 2. I will start with 3. Finish Bonnie Hunter’s mystery, Finish One Block wonder quilt, and quilt a top that is needing to be quilter. Any top. I have several. So those are 3 and I will add to them as I think of them.
Katie says
I’m so glad you’re doing this again. I did it in 2011 and 2012 (and did a lot better in 2011), but many of those UFOs I finished into tops back then are still languishing as tops, so this year it’s a quilting the quilts list! I’m glad you’re quilting more again – I really missed your quilty posts and stories. And I’m trying to get my quilty mojo back, too, so having posted my list publicly, maybe I’ll stay on track? Thank you!

Oh, Christmas Day is past and my family can get on with life. We will actually celebrate on Friday, I think, as my granddaughter is at her mother’s and we will wait until she returns on Thursday evening. I spent today going through all the buckets in my sewing room and made my list:
1. Lewis and Clark — needs to be ironed and then I have to figure out how to straighten and square up the edges so I can add borders. Border 1 is narrow bias strips so I want the center to be squared.
2. Hello Kitty — blocks are all made, need to be ironed and a layout decided on. Half of the blocks are embroidered and half are pieced, so really just need to determine where the embroidered blocks will go. Needs to be pieced in sections so I can quilt it on my home sewing machine.
3. Buffalo — this one takes real attention as it is made in four sections and the borders need to go on the correct section in the correct places. Need to continue working on borders until the sections are large enough that when quilted and put together the quilt will be 100 x 100 inches.
4. I Spy blocks — decide on layout(s) — may be more than one quilt’s worth there. These will be baby or lap quilt size.
5. Nine Patch Baby — needs borders with nine patch cornerstones made and assembled.
6. I Spy hourglass blocks — decide on layout and assemble.
7. Just Ducky — leftovers from another quilt. Need to design a layout and assemble.
8. Grey and Blue Baby Quilts — there are two of these that had parts removed from them and I need to go back and resew the edges of the seams and then decide on borders and assemble.
9. Cats — The pieces are cut but they need to be laid out so I can keep track of the correct order. Add triangles to pieces for the ears, trim, and assemble.
10. Baseball — layout the blocks and assemble.
11. Cathedral Windows baby — red and tan — one row is partially assembled, need to continue making circles and assemble.
12. Cathedral Windows baby — blue trucks — the squares are cut and stacked and the circles need to be cut and assembled.
I found plenty of other things but these are the ones I consider UFOs that need to be worked on.

Shamefully, I am certain I can come up with a list of about 100 UFOs. I am just going to concentrate on two lists for this challenge. The first list is projects that have a bit yet to be done. The second list is simply quilts that need to be quilted which means backings have to be found and/or pieced. I will only publish the first list! 1. Bowl full of cherries table cloth- cherries with leaves and stems need to be appliqued and the edges finished. 2. Bonnie Hunter cathedral stars-need to make several more blocks, assemble the top, then quilt and bind. 3. Bonnie hunter hidden spools-more blocks, assemble top, quilt and bind. 4. Kaye England’s Blocks of the Bible – 2 blocks need to be redone, then assemble, quilt, and bind. 5. Tea Leaves. I believe all the applique “leaves” are made and ready for sewing on the block pieces, then assemble the top, quilt, and bind. 6. Stack and Whack beautiful pink roses with brown background-the blocks need to be assembled, then the top assembled, quilt, then bind. 7. This may be the most difficult one – My husband’s quilt – he designed it and now I need to make it. I may have to make a few design alterations for ease of assembly-need to cut the units, assemble medallion fashion, quilt, then bind. 8. Bowling Bag. The plan is to make a twister style fabric using black and white fabrics that I have collected for the past five years, then use the bag pattern to make the bowling bag. 9. The Red Star corduroy quilt – yes, a quilt made from the salvageable pant legs from my children’s worn out britches. I have one completed top which needs to be quilted and bound. I have 4 children and when the baby was still waiting to come into the world, I assembled corduroy quilt kits for each of my children- the baby is now 19 years old! Pathetic, I know! I am eager though to finish them all! 10. My first large quilt -a queen sized log cabin, made before the introduction of rotary cutters. I won’t go into that long story. Suffice it to say, I had little experience at the time. I need to finish the hand quilting-about one-fourth left, add a border, then bind it! It is only about 30 years in the making. Hey! life happened! 11. Lover’s Knot- a quilt in a day project. It turned out so pretty, I was afraid to quilt it. But now I have a long arm and have no excuses- just quilt and bind!
12. a sweet four patch posey. The top is ready, just quilt and bind! Thanks, Judy, for hosting this challenge! I have been following you for years and so appreciate the inspiration from you, especially about daily life, and from all your followers! I wish you and Vince a very Happy New Year full of prosperity and accomplishment! Anita

One night I had dinner with my college roommate (who lives about 10 minutes away) and she mentioned having a pile of pants that needed hemming. She ended up bringing them all to my house and I finished them within a week. I wished I lived close to you because I honestly like hand-binding. I couldn’t have all of these done in a week though! Good luck!

I’m in. I’ve marked 11 projects with numbers; going to leave No. 12 free to fill something in. Ten out of the 11 are tops and backs, some of which have been sitting for a number of years! It will be really good to get these done!
Dianne K. says
UFO #3 DONE! A kitty-themed quilt with a flannel back that will go to a local charity that makes quilts for kids in crisis. And a second, unnumbered quilt (Peter Rabbit) done as well!
Dianne K. says
UFO #9 DONE! Another charity quilt. And 25 blocks out of fabric that has been waiting for a couple of years or so. Yay!
